"The Whale Rider" Themes What does the director suggest about the themes of culture, leadership and expectations? What do we learn about these ideas? Can you provide an example - a scene/ character/ quote/ symbol from the film that shows this theme?

The indie film Whale Rider is an engrossing character drama with an inspirational message. The story follows a year-old Maori girl named Paikea Apirana who struggles to earn her grandfather's 91%. Conclusion: Its interesting because when Witi Ihimaera was asked why he wrote the book and the character his response was, his daughter had watched Indiana Jones and wanted a female hero so he drew on his own culture and mythologies and created "The Whale Rider".

Whale Rider - Set in the East Coast town of Whāngārā, Whale Rider tells the tale of a young Māori girl, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes), who challenges tradition and embraces the past in order to find the strength to lead her people forward. Directed and written by Niki Caro, the film is based on Witi Ihimaera's novel The Whale Rider. Pai: “And he came on the back of a whale. A man to lead a new people. Our ancestor, Paikea. But now we were waiting for the firstborn of the new generation, for the descendant of the whale rider. For the boy who would be chief.” Pai: “My name is Paikea Apirana and I come from a long line of chiefs, stretching all the way back to the Whale.
